Libraries for Development in Peru

The Libraries for Development project in Peru aims to demonstrate the ability of public libraries to become centers for development and information hubs in their communities. The project will help to bridge the digital and information gap that currently exists in Peru by training librarians in the technology skills and innovative services necessary to respond to community needs. Project partners will also work with community organizations and government representatives to teach them to become advocates for public libraries, and to demonstrate how valuable libraries can be to their communities.

The government of Peru is taking important steps towards transparency, civic engagement, and social inclusion, and its Digital Agenda 2.0 provides a roadmap to build an inclusive knowledge and information society. Despite the progress, many Peruvians across the country still face a large information gap. Although new information and services are available online, few people know of them and even fewer have the necessary access or skills to use them.

Libraries are well-positioned to help develop remote and vulnerable communities, and social and political support for their role in community development is only increasing. This project seeks to widen library services throughout Peru as places for inclusive access to culture, information and knowledge. Through the project existing library services will be strengthened, as well as their administrative staff, so as to turn these public libraries into centers for technological innovation, places for learning, teamwork, development and social inclusion.
